Church of England school expels ‘prayers for places’

A Church of England school has decided to stop selecting pupils on the basis of faith after the local vicar got fed up with complaints about parents who attended church purely to get their child a place. From next year St Luke’s primary in Kingston Upon Thames, south west London, will admit children who live closest to the school. Previously worshippers at St Luke’s or nearby Christian churches were given priority, with no or very few children admitted on distance.

One expert suggested it was part of a national trend away from so called “prayers for places”, with the Church of England and society as a whole pressing for a fairer selection process that reflected the local community.
