New Hampshire Bans Subminimum Wage for People With Disabilities

As the fight for a $15 minimum wage sweeps across the nation, there’s one group of workers who are being left out: people with disabilities, who are eligible for an antiquated legal exemption that permits employers to pay them subminimum wages. One state just moved to change that.

In New Hampshire, Governor Maggie Hassan just confirmed that all workers in the “live free or die” state have equal value: Employers may no longer take advantage of the subminimum wage exemption. Though no employers were actively underpaying their employees under the law, the state’s legislature wanted to be proactive about addressing potential wage disparities.
