KOLKATA: Supriya Saha on Sunday night she set off to represent the country in the 800m brisk-walking category at the Special Olympics in Los Angeles. She is the only woman athlete from India this year.
Special Olympics combines sports with the opportunity to interact with athletes with intellectual disabilities. “Athletes with intellectual disabilities learn at a slower pace, but they learn. They experience the same pressures, insecurity and affronts to their dignity as any other person does,” said Supriya’s mentor Dipa Banerjee. The Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held from July 25 to August 3.
