Chennai: The railway ministry has received a rap on the knuckles from the Madras high court for its ‘absurd’ policy of denying travel concession to disabled people travelling alone. Enraged by the railways’ claim that concessions could be extended only to disabled people with escorts and not to those able to travel alone, the high court also slapped 10,000 as cost on the ministry.
The concession was applicable only to orthopaedically challenged/paraplegic people/patients unable to travel without an escort, the railways told the high court. ” …the same cannot be extended to all people irrespective of the level of handicap. This would result in people with minor handicaps, otherwise fully capable, availing themselves of the concession…,” said the ministry.
