Toll fee: Activists’ appeal to NHAI

Mechanical vehicles, specifically designed and built for the use of a person with a disability, will now be exempt from payment of user fee (toll charges), as per an amendment made by the National Highways Authority of India last week.
While some activists have welcomed this move, they also say that it is not enough: any vehicle carrying a person with a disability should be exempt from toll fee, they say. “How many persons with disabilities have cars that are then specially designed for their use? This amendment will serve only very few people in the country,” said T.M.N. Deepak, State president, December 3 movement, who, along with other activists has been demanding toll exemptions for persons with disabilities.
