CHENNAI: ASunday visit to Eliot’s Beach to beat the heat and enjoy the cool waters may be routine for many city folks, but very few understand that accessibility is a problem for persons with disabilities (PwD), especially wheelchair users, as the sand makes it difficult to push wheelchairs.
So, it was surprising to many, and heartening to PwDs, to find volunteers and organisers assemble a temporary and probably a first-of-its-kind pathway to enable access to the beach. “The pathway consists of interconnecting plates made of a plastic-like material. We were able to borrow it for a couple of days to test it out and see if it would work,” said a volunteer.
