The Right of Persons with Disability Bill 2016 was passed by Parliament in December 2016. The new Act replaced the Persons with Disability Act, 1995, which provided 3% reservation to differently-abled people in government jobs and higher educational institutions.
For almost two decades, there was a demand from various civil society groups and disability activists to increase the quota of reservation in both government jobs and higher educational institutions. After much deliberations for nearly five years, the Bill was finally passed and the disability reservation quota was increased from 3% to 4% in government jobs while in higher education, the increase was from 3% to 5%.
