Javed Abidi: ‘Nothing about Us without Us’

I am an ever-grateful mentee of Javed Abidi. I had never thought I would write about him in the past tense. Especially not since I received his last mail just days ago on Friday, March 2, expressing hope and optimism for India and for the future of people with disabilities in India.
I had known Javed since 1996 when I was still a student at the University of Rajasthan, pursuing my PhD. It was not the time of internet, computers or social media. I had come across his tiny mail in The Indian Express paying tribute to Appan Menon-then editor at NDTV-for airing the protest/ candlelight vigil of the Disability Rights Group (DRG) to press for the passage of the Persons with Disabilities Bill, 1995.
