As a norm established by the United Nations, April 2 of every year is marked as World Autism Day. The day marks the beginning of a whole month to spread awareness about the challenges faced by autistic and intellectually challenged children. The need to spread awareness about the condition can be stressed by citing a recent study by INCLEN Trust International which asserted that one in a hundred children in India under the age of ten have autism.
To gain a better understanding of the situation, we spoke to Dr Priti Arun who is a professor with the department of psychiatry at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh.
